If I’m being completely honest with you, there is a good chance that I would have skipped this series altogether (based on an assumption from the name) had I not spotted the creative team involved. Kieron Gillen does the writing while Stephanie Hans does the artworks. Kieron Gillen has quickly become one of my favorite comic writers (top ten, without a doubt) so I’m willing to follow him to any new project, regardless of how little I know about it.
The series didn’t start off the way I expected it to, but I think that’s a good thing. We start off with the six characters as teenagers, and then quickly watch time fly by as they continue to set the groundwork for the series.
It was oddly intense at times. They made fantastic use of the fear of the unknown – leaving as much unsaid as possible, knowing that it’d be creepier than anything we could come up with on our own.
I really like what I’ve seen so far. As somebody that enjoys roleplaying games, the concept shown of the original game (what little of it we saw) was really unique. But then there’s the slow buildup combined with the large jumps in time. I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like it before. I’m looking forward to the next issue!
