The Walking Dead Volume 1: Days Gone Bye

by Robert Kirkman

  • An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead
to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled:
There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. Rick
Grimes finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying future. A
couple months ago he was a small town cop who had never fired a shot and only
ever saw one dead body. Separated from his family, he must now sort through all
the death and confusion to try and find his wife and son. In a world ruled by
the dead, we are forced to finally begin living.

There seems to be a zombie thing going on in the world of books and movies right now. A lot of movies and books and even tv shows have a zombie theme. I’m usually not a big fan of zombies. They’re pretty boring because the zombies don’t act like humans at all and to me that basically makes them animals. Who wants to read about a bunch of animals who don’t talk or feeling anything like humans do? Certainly not me.

BUT.

This book got me hooked at the start. Somehow the author made you pity these zombies. They just wander around and never die, even if they’re missing half their body like at the start of the book. He makes you pity most of the characters because nothing good happens to them ever. It’s a pretty depressing book. What I really love about it is that it’s not just about the zombies. You see these people trying to cope with losing loved ones and existing with these terrible creatures. They make it look easy but we all know if there was a zombie apocalypse, the majority of use would be dead. Me included. It’s a harsh book if you think about it but it was really entertaining. I’m looking forward to the next one.

Also, I’ve started watching the tv series and it’s not as good as everyone says. The books are way better and more interesting. In the tv show a lot of the characters are whiny and annoying while in the books they’re complete badasses.

I also don’t usually read graphic novels. I’m mostly a novel person. Graphic novels remind me of comic books which I associate with people who like the pictures more than the story. I prefer picturing the characters myself, not having someone draw it out for me. I’ve been getting into graphic novels more lately. Possibly because a lot of my favourite book are coming up with them and I can’t miss anything by these authors. I’m really glad I gave this one a chance. These graphic novels are either a hit or miss for me and this one was a hit.
