Lily Carver has spent the past five years trying to put her life back in order. She fled Toronto and her ex-fiance after finding him in bed with his paralegal. She's sworn off relationships with men, because she feels she has makes poor choices. There's only one man though that she totally depends on and that's her best friend, Sam Denning.

Sam has been in love with Lily since he first met her at age fourteen when he knocked on her door trying to get a summer gardening job. Problem is, he's never had the guts to tell her exactly how he feels. But after a conversation with his sister, who tells him she knows he's in love with Lily, and witnessing another man's attention on her, he throws caution to the wind and kisses her.

That kiss changes everything!

Sam thinks, based on Lily's response, that she's finally ready to take the next step with him. Lily, on the other hand, thinks she's made a colossal mistake and takes off. But the next day, Lily has a very different take on what happens and tosses out a proposal that Sam isn't ready for: have a short term affair and then go back to being just friends. Problem is, will either of them be able to go back once they cross that line?

Sam and Lily each come with a lot of baggage. Sam's still haunted by the taunts and ridicule of being raised on the wrong side of the tracks. Lilly's still dealing with the abusive relationship she had with her ex-finance and the secrets she's kept because of it. But the biggest baggage of all for the two of them are the feelings they have for each other.

Sam knows he's in love with Lily, he's just never done anything about it. Lily doesn't realize what's she's felt for Sam goes much deeper than the love of your best friend. But all of that comes to a head when Lily makes her proposal for the two of them to become lovers for two weeks. Immediately Sam thinks he's finally got his woman, where Lily keeps wondering what kind of mistake are they making. It's that torment that digs at your heart and has you wondering if these two will ever get their act together.

A very satisfying read that was over too soon.
