I learned my lesson with last year’s Iliad and sought out a good translation this time. Fagles did not disappoint.

What was delightful, too, was how many of these lines came back to me. Ten years have passed (at least) since the last time I read The Odyssey and it’s still so vivid in my mind. It’s a story that’s lasted hundreds of years and it’s meant to last hundreds more.

“But the great leveler, death. Not even the gods can defend the man, not even one they love, that day when fate takes hold and lays him out at last.”
