Spider-Woman: Shifting Gears Vol. 3: Scare Tactics

I read Spider-Woman Vol. 3 as individual issues through the Marvel Unlimited app.

The third and final volume of this run of Spider-Woman went a long way in wrapping up all of the loose plots in Jessica’s life. Though I’ll admit that I’m sad to see the series come to a close. Hopefully with the renewed interesting thanks to Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and the Spider-Geddon event we’ll see her series pop up again.
On the bright side, they clearly knew that the series was going to end, and thus took the time and effort into making it have a proper conclusion. I’m thrilled about this – there’s nothing that bugs me more than a permanent cliffhanger (especially in comics).
Spider-Woman Vol. 3 was a fun and surprisingly emotional read. It had a little bit of everything, from the bitter-sweet to the sappy. It was everything I could have hoped for from this volume – and then some.


I was honestly surprised by some of the events in Spider-Woman Vol. 3. I think I mean that in both a good and a bad way. But mostly good, promise! I love that they took the time to wrap up most of Jessica’s floating plots. Some of these plots I had even forgotten about, so credit to the creators there.
Don’t worry though, this volume didn’t focus entirely on wrapping things up. There was a main plot as well. They just cleverly combined the two together into something quite intense and emotional. It was a brilliant move, actually.
There was a lot to love about this volume. Starting with the fact that Roger really got his moment here. Okay, he kind of got a few. But I’m happy for him. I know that they’d been playing with his character for a while now, so it was nice to see something come from his plot.
I also adore that they finally resolved the whole mess that happened from Civil War II. You know the one I’m talking about – with Jessica and Carol Danvers on the outs? I’m a fan of both characters, and I adore them as besties, so I was not okay with that turn of events. Nice to see we’ve moved past it. But! They didn’t just magically have it all disappear – they actually addressed the elephant in the room and I love that.
My biggest complaint about this volume is that it had a fairly large fakeout moment. It was really really intense and in many ways, I’m glad what happened didn’t stick. But it’s still a pet peeve of mine, so I figure I’d mention it. I will say that on the whole it was really well done, so I have to give them credit for that.
And let’s not forget the baby! He made it into this volume as well – of course. I was laughing my butt off at a few of his moments, especially in the last issue. But I won’t spoil them by talking about it too much (even if this volume is several years old by this point).
The last issue was really more of a feel-good and wrap up issue. But that honestly was a good thing. There were so many characters involved in this one, but it was actually kind of perfect. It’s like they were all there to give the series a proper send off.
