Obsidio by Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff

Obsidio (Illuminae Files, #3)

by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

From bestselling author duo Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff comes the exciting finale in the trilogy that broke the mold and has been called "stylistically mesmerizing" and "out-of-this-world-awesome."

Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza--but who knows what they'll find seven months after the invasion? Meanwhile, Kady's cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza's ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys--an old flame from Asha's past--reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heros will fall, and hearts will be broken.

A KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST BOOK OF 2018

It was good, but I think I was expecting a little more... I'm not even sure what "more" would be, but it didn't seem quite as epic as the first two. Maybe after seeing other reviewers' reactions my expectations were too high. I was expecting HOLY SHIT EPIC AMAZEBALLS and what I got was "really good". So still a very good book, just not the level of epicness I thought it would be.

Here are some of the things I expected that didn't happen:

- Maybe I expected some intense crazy mindfuckery science after Gemina, but there wasn't any.

- I thought we'd see more of AIDAN at the end. Like maybe there would be some AI-on-AI war or something.

- The thing with Ezra's mom was anti-climactic. They built it up to be this huge deal and then barely anything came of it. It was a just, "Hey mom - I hate you. Bye." And that was pretty much all it ended up being, after they built it up to be this huge crazy thing.

- I liked the story behind the Asha/Rhys romance, but it wasn't nearly as developed as the others. I suppose that's due to them being on different sides and spending less time together, but it was a bit of a downer after how awesome the other two romances were.

- The ending (like last 15 pages or so) felt rushed. Maybe after all that build up it was just sad to have it over so quickly.

Obsidio was still REALLY enjoyable, I'm just bummed it didn't end up being my favourite in the series.
