Her mentor Mercurio is now in the clutches of her enemies. Her own family wishes her dead. And her nemesis, Consul Julius Scaeva, stands but a breath from total dominance over the Republic.

But beneath the city, a dark secret awaits. Together with her lover Ashlinn, brother Jonnen and a mysterious benefactor returned from beyond the veil of death, she must undertake a perilous journey across the Republic, seeking the final answer to the riddle of her life. Truedark approaches.

Night is falling on the Republic for perhaps the final time.

No five stars...? I know...

I was so excited about this book. I wanted to love this book. But... I did not like it as much as I hoped.
I have no problem with the ending itself, but I was a bit disappointed that it turned out to be a book about being the chosen one and different gods. Especially about the gods. I liked the story and the world as it is. I think the gods were thrown into the story too late, and at that point, it felt as if that was the only ending Jay could come up with so he went with it. However, the gods are done pretty well and there is this whole backstory that I do like. Still, it all comes down to familia. I really appreciated that. I cannot deny that even though I did not like this twist of events, Jay did a marvelous job and if I reread the series, I will probably love it because I know what to expect. Hopefully...
But why did everyone come back from the death?! First Tric, then Ashlinn, and even Mia. What a nonsense.

I missed the footnotes. I was really looking forward to them and they were just... gone. For more than half of the book. I missed them and for me, it was always a strong point of the series.
Also, the beginning was so incredibly slow. Nothing happened for half the book and there were no footnotes, nothing of interest was happing unless you count Mia and Ashlinn having sex every few pages, but after I few times I had enough of the two of them... I still love them together though, but I just wanted more things to happen in the first half of the story.
