The second issue of Middlewest was just as striking as the first. I adore the colors this series has been using. They’re so pretty and bold, it’s hard not to fall in love with them. Jean-Francois Beaulieu’s colors perfectly compliment Jorge Corona’s artwork. This series might have to get the best images of the year, in my book at least.
But while the artwork always catches my eye first, the plot has been what’s keeping me entertained. Abel is an interesting character. It’s so clear that there’s so much more to him and the world around him than he knows, I just haven’t put all the pieces together just yet.
In a way the series reminds me of a warped version of the Wizard of Oz. There’s the child on a journey, the adults being full of magic, some are all-knowing. Plus Abel even has a guide. That’s where the similarities end though. Middlewest truly is its own unique piece of work. There’s nothing quite like it out there.
This issue did a fantastic job of further establishing the plot as well as fully catching my curiosity. I can see what some of the characters are up to, but not all of them. I can’t wait to see what will be revealed in the next issue.
