Infernal Devices by K W Jeter

Infernal Devices (The George Dower Trilogy, #1) (Angry Robot)

by K W Jeter

When George's father died he left George his watchmaker's shop – and more.

But George has little talent for watches and other infernal devices. When someone tries to steal an old device from the premises, George finds himself embroiled in a mystery of time travel, music and sexual intrigue.

The classic steampunk tale from the master of the genre.

This book is written in the format of a journal, with the main character telling us his observations and opinions. It starts in the present time and then switches back however long ago in order to tell us the story of how things ended up the way they did.
So far, its pretty interesting, though I haven't made my way to the meat of the plot yet.
