Avian (Dragonrider Universe, #2) (Dragonrider Chronicles, #2)

by Nicole Conway

What kind of power is lurking inside him?

After a year of training to become a dragonrider, Jaevid Broadfeather has been sent home to rest during a three-month interlude. But when he returns to find the king drake has chosen Beckah Derrick as his new rider, Jaevid realizes something big is about to happen. Every fiber of his being is pushed to the breaking point as Jaevid battles through his avian year, preparing for the final graduation test of the battle scenario. But there is more standing in his way than a few pushups and fancy sword moves. Jaevid must face a new fear as he is tormented by a gruesome nightmare of a mysterious gray elf warrior murdering the royal family of Maldobar. It seems obvious to him that this is some kind of message about how the war started long ago—until Felix assures him the king is very much alive. With his strange powers growing stronger by the day, and that violent dream replaying in his mind every night, Jaevid no longer wonders if he will pass his avian year or not—he wonders if he will even survive it.

The truth will soon be set loose.

"Not everyone can be a dragonrider. Not everyone can handle the stress or physical demands of having the most dangerous job in the king's forces" This is a great way to start out this second book in this amazing series as we now upon the most intense part of Jae training his Avian year. Being a halfbreed has always been a dangerous thing to be at the academey and Jae will find out "Destiny has a funny way of picking you when you least expect it"

I do like the twist with Beckah and her dragon Icarus who is described "Like a monster that had crawled right out of someone's nightmares" and he called to a girl who is forbidden to be a dragonrider. This sets us up to find out some great things about Beckah character and how she tests this theory that women can't ride a dragon. She even has this great scence where she shows dominance over this huge dragon "Those are my friends! Stop being a bully"

Then we got poor Jae who is helplessly falling for Beckah and her dad lets him know how much he be displeased by this "If i catch you sniffing around my daughter's room, I'll pull those pointed ears right off your head" As a result of her wanting to keep Icarus he spends his break with them, since he been abandoned by his family at his previous home that is now his.

When Jae performs more of his special talents he ends having a result of growing bigger then he ever been and as result he going to be treated even more differently as he heads back to school. Once there and he moves on to the final stage, all of his talents will be put to the test. Old enemies will strike, friends who were once enemies will become friends in the line of fire and a huge secret is revealed right at the very heart stopping end of the book. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat right up to the end.
