Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1)

by Ilona Andrews

Ilona Andrews invites you to experience the first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series featuring the intriguing fantasy world of mercenary Kate Daniels…

When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta’s magic circles.

The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings—and the death of Kate’s guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she’s way out of her league—but she wouldn’t have it any other way...

Wow. I just finished this and I'm still slighty impressed because I did like it. Don't get me wrong. It makes me happy that I liked it as I did but I was told that this was the worst in the series and as I haven't read an urban fantasy/paranormal book for ages, my expectatives were quite low. But surprise! It was good! (Sana and Steph, if you read this, thank you for making me interested in reading those because I can see myself as a future die hard fan like you both).

I don't want to think much today so I will just write a list of what I liked:

1. Kate: she's so straightforward and sarcastic and she doesn't give a fuck about anyone. I also liked the mistery about her power and I'm dying to find out more.
2. Worlbuilding: I mean, there's not much and some things were just throwed at me without explanation and I was very confused at the beginning but I liked what the authors did with the magic and technology and I hope to learn more in the future.
3. This is really an urban fantasy novel, not a romance novel with urban fantasy elements. I still can't believe the little importance romance had in this one and although the sexual tension between characters was so good to read, there wasn't much more and I'm thankful.
4. The vampires aren't sparky hot things to look at but hideous brainless monsters and that's some fresh air xDDDD
5. When Curran was being an asshole but Kate put him in his place.

That's all for now, maybe I will write something better later :D
