Breaking Rules is completely different to Chris Reardon's other book Obstacles, this one is aimed at Middle grade children and takes you into a world where witches live in another realm.
We meet Trish and Kenny to begin with, they are 6th graders and Kenny is fed up, there is never anything happening, he wants fun, Trish on the other hand would rather stay where she is.
Salina a young witch, is breaking rules, she is not allowed to use the magical equipment and he brother Max catches her in the act but always seems to watch out for her and clean up her mess.
Salina decides she wants to teach Kenny a lesson and sends him on a trial while keeping Trish locked up in Salina's basement. But things go awfully wrong when the realm discovers that an unusual amount of magic has been coming out of Salina's house and the witches discover Trish. This is not good, for Trish who will be put to death as humans cannot know of the witches realm and Salina is in deep trouble too, and what about Kenny who is doing his trial. Will he be left there, will Trish die.
This is packed with suspense, magic and adventure and would definitely appeal to children from around 8 years of age.
It was a great read.
