Bariatric Diet Guide and Cookbook is a dietary plan, information guide, and cookbook with recipes developed by Dr. Matthew Weiner. Due out 11th May 2021 from Penguin Random House on their DK imprint, it's 192 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

Current research continues to emphasize how nearly all our body systems depend on our digestive system working as well as possible. Our gut is not only responsible for effective digestion and processing of nutrients, but is also being shown to have far reaching effects on our energy levels, mental health, hormonal balance, mood, and much more. Bariatric surgery obviously has a huge impact on the function of the digestive system. This guide is by an experienced bariatric surgeon who also has a clinic for post-surgical patient supportive care and management.

The introductory chapters are followed by the recipes arranged thematically and roughly chronologically for post-surgery: protein shakes & clear liquids, soft dairy & blended foods, cooked vegetables & blended soups, beans eggs & hearty soups, fish & nuts, and chicken. The third section of the book includes foods and meals for maintenance for a healthy lifestyle change.

Each of the recipes includes an introductory description (including a sidebar with post-surgery serving sizes), ingredients listed in a bullet point sidebar (US measurements only, very few metric conversions), and step by step instructions. The nutritional info is provided in a highlighted footer with the recipe and includes calories, total fat & carbs, fiber, sugar, cholesterol, protein, and sodium. Roughly 20% of the recipes are photographed, and they're done well and clearly. Serving suggestions are attractive and appropriate.

The recipe ingredients themselves are mostly easily sourced and will be available at well stocked grocery stores along with some ingredients being found in international/Asian markets. The book includes an index with partial ingredients list, but does not include a metric conversion table.

Five stars. Very appealing and well written support guide with recipes. I would recommend it for readers undergoing bariatric surgery, or cooks who are supporting someone who is undergoing or has undergone weight loss surgery.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
