I'll say that, as a child, I was actually really into complex illustrations that I could spend lots of time looking at finding things that were new, and which I could entertain myself with even without reading the book. Though the story here is cute, I would have not been impressed by this book as a child because the art is so intentionally simple. I appreciate the style as a adult, but as a child with no artistic knowledge I'm afraid I might have found the illustrations boring.
