When Worms Abandon Their Burrows is a mystery thriller, and though it had a slow start, it ultimately had me reading to the end to find out what would happen. Though we did find out the truth at the end, I felt like there should have been a bit more resolution. There were no repercussions for the culprit because we didn't get to see what happened next. A little bit of that would have gone a long way.

I had a problem with some of the questionable choices made by some of the characters, a few of which seemed unrealistic, but it wasn't enough to make me stop reading.

There were a lot of twists and turns, and it became a bit convoluted at times, especially with all of the descriptive dialogue. The book could have been about 100 pages shorter, and it missed the mark of "show, don't tell" by a long shot. However, if you can get past the long-winded conversations, the story itself is intriguing.

All in all, When Worms Abandon Their Burrows is an interesting whodunnit that ties all the points of the mystery together in the end. If you're in the market for a mystery that isn't solved until the very last page, this one's for you.

Content warning: Please be aware that as this book revolves around the unsolved sexual assault of an eleven-year-old girl, the assault is referred to, in detail, quite often, so if that's something that would be a concern, you may want to avoid this one.
