Sherlock Holmes meets a sort of Adolf Hitler

Boneseeker: Here Walk the Dead by Brynn Chapman is a compelling novel. Very different from the first one but still very Sherlock Holmesy. His daughter though is at it again and getting things done her way.

What I like:

  • Arabella and Henry are still the main two characters and are very much in love. Well, at least as much in love as a Holmes can really show.

  • We met her friend, Oliver, that she mentioned in the last book and he is a fascinating character. Oliver does have unattainable expectations for Arabella.

  • Once Arabella gets her mind set on doing some things that is it. She is very much like Sherlock when he is trying to solve it.

  • Newton is a smart and loyal dog, and without him, I believe that they will never be able to solve their cases. Newton is like Sherlock's Toby.

  • The villain, Frederick Stygian is definitely Arabella's own James Moriarty.

What I dislike

Mostly, I dislike that Arabella doesn't communicate well with Henry. If she would have told Henry what she believed perhaps things would have been different. Also, Henry should know better than to try and keep anything from Arabella. Then again if it weren't for those things wouldn't have had a good story.

The last thing, I didn't care for the whole insane aslyum part of it. I know though that back in 1911 that happened more than we realized. Also, the setting made since I am happy that we have risen past that at this time.

Four Stars

I am giving Boneseeker: Here Walk the Dead by Brynn Chapman a four-star rating because it was good but not as fabulous as the first one.  Also, I am still in love with Holmes and Watson the next generation. Yet, there were lots of changes and a couple of plot twists that I didn't agree with.

I recommend this book to fans of Sherlock. It is a good read.

Interview with Brynn Chapman

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

While this might seem a lame superpower…healing. I work in medicine, and nothing would give me greater joy to flutter my hands above an ailing subject, and alter their life. In real life, there’s much more blood, sweat, and pain involved in healing.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

Erm, I never have control. Characters, scenes, and scenarios arrive of their own accord, without warning, and I just happen to be present, scrabbling for a pencil to jot down the happenings like some literary voyeur.

Do you imagine your characters fully or find pictures of your hero or heroine before?

I am not a great visual thinker…while characters come to me fully formed as to their personalities, I always use actors and actresses to help with my visualization process. As a result, all of my books end up with Pinterest boards.

What was your favorite character to write and why?

Henry and Bella have been living in my head for a very long time now…so, just like my children, I love them for different reasons.

I love Henry for his heart, his compassion, and his fearlessness under fire. And his uncompromising love for Bella, no matter what the rest of the world thinks.

I love Bella for her complexity. Her innocence, and her pain, and her courage to continue to try to connect with Henry and others she loves, despite it being nearly unnatural for her.

If you could spend time with a character from any of your books whom would it be? And what would you be doing?

Oh, wow. That’s like asking a mom to pick her favorite child—we don’t have one….but….I would love to spend time with Jane, my character from the Requiem Red. She’s locked in an asylum, and I just might have a few tricks to help her find her way out.

What project are you working on now?

I am finishing a historical novel, and a VERY scary horror-fantasy keeps knocking on the inside of my cranial vault, sending my poor brain sloshing back and forth like a contra coup injury.

Follow me on social media, because I am inevitably posting excerpts from whatever my work in progress is at the time.

Aspiring scientist Arabella Holmes doesn't fit the role of a 1900s lady. Her father, Sherlock, landed her a position at the Mütter Museum to pursue her dream of becoming a purveyor of abnormal science, or what her father calls a "Boneseeker."

Henry Watson’s two-fold mission at the Mütter Museum is to join their team of forensic anthropologists in unearthing unusual antiquities and to watch over Arabella. If only he could get her to speak to him, instead of hurling knives in his general direction. Assigned to a most secret expedition to investigate a mysterious skeletal hand discovered in upstate New York, Arabella and Henry are soon caught in a scientific debate, and the search for the truth may have deadly consequences for those involved.

Are the bones from a Neanderthal? Or are they living proof of fallen angels known as Nephilim?

Watson and Holmes must put aside their differences, trust their instincts, and rely on one another to survive to uncover the truth.
