Dark Game by Rachel Lynch

Dark Game (Detective Kelly Porter, #1)

by Rachel Lynch

Keeping secrets comes at a deadly price

After a scandal forces DI Kelly Porter out of the Met, she returns home to the Lake District. There she begins work on a shocking cold case – the abduction and brutal murder of ten-year-old Lottie Davies. The girl was taken during a birdwatching trip when her parents were distracted for just a few minutes. Was it an opportunist crime or a cold-blooded plan by someone who’d been watching and waiting?

Meanwhile, Kelly is investigating two apparently unrelated cases: a baby abandoned on the dales and the death of a local businessman. But soon the evidence reveals a tangled web of criminal activity. Behind the veneer of sleepy, touristy towns lies a dangerous underworld and the DI risks paying the ultimate price to get to the truth…

Don’t miss this taut and gripping novel from million-copy bestseller Rachel Lynch. Perfect for fans of Carol Wyer, Patricia Gibney and Angela Marsons.

Like a lot of the books I've been reading lately - this started off slow but I came to really enjoy it. The story initially starts with three storylines but it became more interesting as the storylines became entwined. The fighting between Kelly and her sister seemed a bit juvenille for a thirty something woman but family. The mystery was interesting and I loved Gabriela. Kelly was alright. The villains of the tale are more fleshed out than the main cast, it wasn't until near the end any of the main cast were distinguishable in any way. But while not big on character development, the book is big on procedural goodness and faithfully recounts the trail of every lead and tips to wrap up the mystery in a nice pretty bow. Solid 3.5 stars. I rounded down to three stars because it annoyed me that Gabriela wasn't taken into police custody. If you have a case where all the witnesses keep going missing and are presumably dead - why wouldn't you protect the witnesses you do have. Seemed like a major oversight and it annoyed the crap out of me.
