3.5/5 Although the plot picked up and I got more invested in the story as it went along, I still felt pulled away and couldn't quite enjoy the story as much as I wanted to due to the telling vs. showing and omniscient vs. deep POV. I prefer the latter and have read many middle grades with that closer perspective to make me feel connected to the characters, which was lacking in this story. Although the plot was exciting, because I'm more of a character-driven reader and looking for a bit more refined prose, I won't be moving forward with the rest of the series.
