I won this from the First Reads giveaway.

First of all, I must mention that the writing of this is quite stuffy, which is distracting. There's almost no use of contractions; it's always "I am," "It is," "We will," and "cannot." There is the occasional "it's," but rarely. Even the conversations between teens are contraction-less, which is unrealistic. Although, the conversations tended to seem unrealistic anyway, especially those between Sophia and Nate: major cheese factor, and I don't mean Havarti! Basically all of the dialogue in this seemed like a script rather than conversational.

I did like that some of the chapters were narrated by characters other than Sophia; I've always been a fan of multiple POVs. Plus it was a nice break from Sophia's constant flip-flopping emotions and her constant reminder to the reader that she's "not a human" and "a monster." Yeah, we get it, you're a vampire!

There are MANY similarities to Twilight and the Vampire Diaries, but that's to be expected during this sudden vampire novel frenzy. It was enjoyable enough, but it ended before it even began! All of a sudden they're preparing for this epic vampire war, and then the sneak peek for book 2 shows up! I guess I'm going to have to read the second one just to see what happens.

I would probably suggest this to the younger end of the YA-reader spectrum, since someone older will probably just roll their eyes at almost everything Sophia thinks and says, like I did and I'm only 21.
