Abigail was possibly more put out by being remanded to bedrest by Dr. Linus Bennett than the shot in the arm by a zealous militiaman that put her there! Little did Linus realize just how irrepressible she was!

Regina Scott writes some pretty strong female characters - which are uncommon for the time in which her stories take place. Left alone to care for her mother when she was still young, how could Abby not be independent? I loved the way that she was so determined to do things herself and yet it was out of deep concern for the people around her. Even her shop served the purpose of providing for the community!

Linus had become afraid of strong women after the death of his wife. Well, probably earlier than that, due to her selfish behavior. In his desire to care for his son and his patients, he was a little overbearing and was so serious! I'm so glad Abby was able to lighten his burdens and help him to smile again.

The sparks flying between Abby and Linus were such fun. At first, the sparks were those of anger. His, because he had seen patients die of wounds like hers and didn't want to watch another do the same. Hers, because she felt that he was just ordering her around! And then, as they spent time together, the sparks became those of another sort!

If you have been following the series, you'll be happy to know that the militia has improved a bit and has moved on to learning firearms. Then again, maybe that should worry you! After Linus is abducted, brought to treat a French spy, and is unceremoniously returned to the Spa, the militia was commissioned to guard him every night.

I loved the way they continued to look under every rock (figuratively, of course), to identify the French spy they were convinced was lodging among them. The questions they asked and the manner in which they were interrogating the Newcomers was fun!

Favorite characters from the previous books in the Grace-by-the-Sea series returned, including Aunt Maude, one of my favorites! And the women - well, let's just say I was proud of them so I don't give anything away.

If you enjoy historical romance with a touch of intrigue, you will want to read The Artist's Healer.
