A Cold Legacy by Megan Shepherd

A Cold Legacy (Madman's Daughter, #3)

by Megan Shepherd

With inspiration from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, this breathless conclusion to the Madman's Daughter trilogy explores the things we'll sacrifice to save those we love . . . even our own humanity.

Juliet has killed the men who tried to steal her father's research and escaped to a remote estate on the Scottish moors. Owned by the enigmatic Elizabeth von Stein, the mansion is full of unexplained oddities: dead bodies in the basement, secret passages, and fortune-tellers who seem to know Juliet's secrets. This is not the safe haven Juliet was searching for.

As she uncovers the truth about the manor's long history of scientific experimentation - and her own intended role in it - Juliet is forced to determine where the line falls between right and wrong, life and death, magic and science. She must decide if she'll follow her father's dark footsteps or her mother's tragic ones - or make her own.

A Cold Legacy was a wonderful ending to this series! The eeriness and unsettled feeling from the first book returns, and I'd probably say, I was even more disturbed and unsettled by this finale! Juliet has made it to Scotland where she hopes she's safe from the police and anyone else who would seek to punish her. It's there where she meets several young woman of the staff who have parts that are not their own. There's even the scariest child in the universe living there, whom Juliet is both fascinated by and terrified of. But that creepy boy gives root to an idea that just might save Edward's life.

I adored A Cold Legacy, even when it was freaking me out. Juliet turns back to weird science in this installment, but not just for curiosity's sake or because of madness. She truly wants to help Edward be free of the beast, since he's helped her time and time again. The methods may be unethical, but the end justifies the means, right? Maybe. I'm sure you can figure out what she has to do, since this is based on Frankenstein and she's currently living in Dr. Frankenstein's home.

A lot happens in A Cold Legacy, and there are some disturbing and shocking reveals which I don't want to give away! It truly is a great ending, since Juliet finally comes to terms with who she is (or who she isn't) and she and Montgomery finally stop tip toeing around each other with secrets (oh, are there secrets!!!). I also continued to absolutely adore Balthazar and Sharkey! I just really, really liked this finale.
