This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews This is another book that was chosen by my work book club. I'd previously read one of Mel Sharratt's books a few years ago so I was looking forward to jumping into this one.

Set in Stoke on Trent, Detective Grace Allendale has recently returned to her childhood town. Grace and her mum left Stoke to get away from her abusive father George Steele. George Steele soon brought in his other woman and his 3 other children. George and his family were soon known as a local crime family. Grace was really hoping that her first case wouldn't involve her estranged family but of course, it does! Grace is a very likeable character. She is a straight talker and only cares about right and wrong. She's not afraid to do the right thing.

The story had so many twists and turns. I kept thinking I knew who the murderer was but then Mel would throw in something else and I'd be full of doubt again! Mel did such a good job of keeping me guessing. When it was finally revealed I honestly just felt so sad.

I was so hooked on this book. I read about 200 pages in one night I just could not put it down! I'm so eager to pick up book 2!
