Kissed by the Wave by Serena Gilley was my first adult mermaid book and I really, really wanted to love it. It ended up sending me into a bit of a reading slump. It took me three weeks to finish this book. If I had the ability to DNF a book this would be it, but that's a different subject for a different day.

The biggest problem that I had was that I just did not care for the main characters at all. Aliya is not a part of our culture so she doesn't know much. That didn't bother me but I felt like all of Aliya's speech was wooden. This was supposed to make her different but I felt it was detrimental.

My favorite parts included side characters rather than the main characters. When I read a romance I really need to feel invested in the main characters. They are after all the whole point of the book. My enjoyment of Raea and Kyne is not enough for me to carry on with the series.
