Aye! The emotional drama in this one! I knew going in that Spike and Ciara's story was going to be tough, but holy hell, batman! There were times I wanted to shake some sense into the two of them.
Spike's emotions are all over the place. He's still reeling from the death of his wife and unborn child. He feel guilty for his role in the events that lead to their death. He's angry and he's hellbent on revenge. But those feelings almost pale in comparison to what he feels for Ciara, his wife's little sister and his ex-best friend. He's hurt, angry, confused, full of lust and fighting (tooth and nail) the love he's always felt for her. Sometimes with Ciara, he's his own worst enemy because all those emotions get the best of him and he blurts out some heinous things to which he's immediately wrecked with guilt.
Then there's Ciara. She always felt second best to Cheyenne, except with Danny (aka Spike). He was her best friend, but she felt so much more for him. Fear made her hold back and never reveal her feelings for Danny and in the end that cost her the man that she loved. But more than that, it cost her her self of self-worth and ultimately her family. Ciara lashes out at Spike in horrible ways without thinking of the consequences. She holds onto her righteous indignations without thinking about what he might be going through after all he's lost.
It's enough to make you want to smack both of them, hard and repeatedly, until they finally get it together.
Spike and Ciara's story is about letting go of the past and being honest. For these two, they had to realize they both played a very big role in the events that tore them apart and be willing to both apologize to and forgive the other. Once they put that stake in the ground, their relationship turned and they could start to build some semblance of a life.
As I continue on my MC reading journey, I'll add this as another one that I enjoyed. I'm looking forward to seeing what Jackson's story is going to bring.
