Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake

Girl Made of Stars

by Ashley Herring Blake

Mara and Owen are as close as twins can get, so when Mara's friend Hannah accuses Owen of rape, Mara doesn't know what to think. Can her brother really be guilty of such a violent act? Torn between her family and her sense of right and wrong, Mara feels lost, and it doesn't help that things are strained with her ex-girlfriend, Charlie. As Mara, Hannah, and Charlie come together in the aftermath of this terrible crime, Mara must face a trauma from her own past and decide where Charlie fits into her future. With sensitivity and openness, this timely novel confronts the difficult questions surrounding consent, victim blaming, and sexual assault.

That was heartbreakingly realistic, but hopeful.

Blake did a fantastic job tackling these issues with great care and sensitivity, but what I loved the most, was the friendship and support Charlie, Hannah, and Mara found in each other. There were so many beautiful and meaningful moments they shared as women and survivors.

I also thought Blake did not take the easy way out. Mara was in a very complicated situation, and Blake did an incredible job navigating her emotions, as well as the fallout. I might be crying a little as I write this, because the story is very moving and because it's a story we hear too often, but there were those lovely bits in there too, which sustained my spirit and kept me somewhat optimistic.

Beautifully written, emotional, and real. Blake continues to impress me.
