Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2)

by J.K. Rowling

The Dursleys were so mean that hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike.

And strike it does. For in Harry's second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockheart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls' bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley's younger sister, Ginny.

But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone — or something — starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects . . . Harry Potter himself?

You know when you go through some rough days and then you just want to go home and relax for a bit? Coming back to Hogwarts after the disappointments I felt with my latest two reads felt exactly like coming home.

───────────────────

No matter how old I actually get, I don’t believe that another series could ever come close to taking the spot of my favourite series from Harry Potter. My goodness, what a beautiful happy place to return to.

I do believe that I enjoyed book 1 a little more than 2 in my reread, but I did actually laugh more than once while reading this book which isn’t something I recall happened as frequently in book 1’s reread. That being said, it was interesting to see how the book is different from the movie, mind you it’s a very slight difference, but there were a few things that made me wish were adapted as well. For example and specifically; the party, History of Magic and of course Peeves the poltergeist. Might not have added a lot of difference, but when you love something so much and you want everything in it to be adapted, it’s easy to be really greedy.

This is also the seemingly first read of mine where I noticed that some personalities have been toned down a bit when compared to the adaptations, for example, we all know that Lockhart is very annoying, but I didn’t actually think he’ll be worse in the books. Draco as another example, while he’s bullying them for the sake of being mean, the book gave me the larger impression of how petty he really is as a character.

Little things like these to name a couple, are what makes revisiting this series a real treat for me. I rarely reread books, honestly didn’t do it before my HP reread because nothing strikes me as worth it, but who knows? Maybe by the time I’m done, my view would have changed a bit.

Like the reread of book 1, I have continued on with the second book’s enhanced edition. There is something very interesting in reading something and seeing a moving picture of it in the next page when the need arises. Always made me think that I’m seeing a wizard photo and increased my geekiness to somewhat dangerous levels lol.

I did notice something in this book in regards to the sorting, but I’ll keep it in the comments section below to avoid any potential spoilers even when I don’t think this series could ever be truly spoiled anymore. It’s also really difficult to talk about this series in full details with how familiar it is to me.... 🙃
