Defenseless by Corinne Michaels

Defenseless (Salvation, #5)

by Corinne Michaels

My life is a secret.

His life is dangerous.

We're both stubborn, calculating, and controlling.

Mark Dixon doesn't know what he's getting into. He doesn't know his games could cost us our lives. I have to do what is necessary to keep us alive, and that means guarding my heart.

But I know I'm defenseless against him, and in the end, he'll force me to surrender.

I've been waiting for Mark's story. I've often wondered exactly what kind of woman would bring Twilight to his knees.

Mark Dixon has often times seemed like the comic relief guy to me, but we find out just how deeply affected he's been by Aaron's kidnapping and return and the fact that is appears like someone is messing with Jackson's company. I liked discovering there was more to Mark. That he's fiercely protective of those he loves. And despite what he might say to the contrary, the man was lonely. So it was perfect timing for CIA operative Charlie to waltz into his world.

Charlie had her own set of issues. Dealing with her father's death, what she did while undercover and being removed from the case she's worked years on took it's toll on her. When her investigation butts into what Mark is doing, she decides to help him. What she gets is challenged by a man that she can't control and learning that sometimes it's OK to be weak around a man who wants nothing more than to help her stand tall.

I wasn't sure about Charlie with Mark, but as the story moved forward I found myself realizing that she was just the type of woman Mark needed. She didn't let him walk all over her or charm her into doing what he wanted. She kept him on his toes and kept him honest. Those things don't work well for this couple right away, but they figured out how to navigate their investigation, their issues and develop a bond that would pull them through anything.

Corinne Michaels doesn't disappoint with her latest release. DEFENSELESS may not have been as gut-wrenching as Liam or Jackson's stories, but Mark's was as engaging and page turning as the others.
