Preface: I am not up to date with Champions. I know, I hate that fact too. I actually really like this series, especially with the addition of some of the newer characters. Still, I was curious about the character on the cover, and I figured since it was an annual it would sit nicely outside of the context for everything else that’s happening. And it looks like I was right. So if you’re not up to date either, don’t worry about it.
This wasn’t quite an origin story. The character is already settling in well with her powers, her status as a Champion has already been established, things like that. But it did cover her origin quickly, but then from there it moved on to the current problems she’s facing. It showed the difficulties any young superhero would face, but more than that it should how it would be particularly difficult for a person with a strong sense of community. It’s not like they can stay home and only protect their people. Well, I suppose they could…but you get what I mean.
Snowbird is an interesting character. I absolutely adore the way they designed her – that was the main reason I picked up this issue, truth be told. But I also found her backstory fascinating as well. I can’t wait to see her in context with the rest of the Champions.
