Rage and Ruin by Jennifer L Armentrout

Rage and Ruin (Harbinger, #2)

by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Book 2 of The Harbinger contemporary fantasy series features angels, demons and gargoyles in a battle to save humanity. For fans of Cassandra Clare, Gena Showalter and Holly Black.

A half human, half angel and her bonded gargoyle protector must work with demons to stop the apocalypse while avoiding falling in love. The Harbinger is coming...but who or what is it? All of humankind may fall if Trinity and Zayne can't win the race against time as dark forces gather...and Lucifer himself may walk the earth once more.
Tensions rise and Zayne and Trinity must stay close together and patrol the D.C. streets at night, seeking signs of the Harbinger, an entity that is killing Wardens and demons with no seeming rhyme or reason. Forbidden to be with each other, they fight their feelings and turn to unusual sources for help--the demon Roth and his cohorts. But as more deaths pile on and they uncover a sinister plot involving the local high school and endangering someone dear to Zayne, Trin realizes she is being led...herded...played for some unknown end. As anger builds and feelings spiral out of control, it becomes clear that rage may be the ruin of them all.

I received this book for free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Trinity and Zayne are back as they hunt down the Harbinger in this ho-hum young adult romance.

THIS is the book I expected from the first in the series, Storm and Fury. Love triangles – err quadrangles? Yes! Moody and self-righteous Zayne? Yes, he’s here too! Not to be outdone, you’ll see lots more Roth (although not much Layla *thank the gods*). My biggest problem by far is the romance between Zayne and Trinity. Zayne did some shady shit in the novel, and yet it felt like Trinity was always in the wrong. Did Zayne actually do anything morally unethical? No, but the communication between the two made me really, REALLY dislike them both toward the end.

The book wasn’t a total loss – the last 30% was fast-paced and interesting, pulling away from the angst filled romance to the actual plot. I just…I REALLY liked the first book in the series. It completely blew me out of the water how much I enjoyed it considering I detested the original series. It was disappointing to see all the issues I had with the original trilogy resurface in this book. I plan on reading the last book, but I hope the love story is toned down.

tl;dr I didn’t like this book nearly as much as the first novel, but overall it’s still an entertaining read.
