Overall this was a pretty good series. It’s well plotted and not entirely predictable—even though I saw the broad strokes pretty clearly the details weren’t obvious. Bits dropped into earlier books or scenes all pay off. The pacing is good and it’s a good blend of action and funny and character beats.

This particular book, all of the sudden characters were cursing which wouldn’t have been quite so shocking if there had been any in the first two books. But it goes from zero course words to f-bombs a surprising number of times out of nowhere.

I think the thing that really works for this series is the vast number of characters. I like ensembles and I like character interactions so much more than wandering around in a single character’s thoughts. This has lots of characters and they all play a part and they’re all pretty well developed.

And even though I technically the whole thing was pretty well done (which is an accomplishment to be sure) there was nothing about any of it that grabbed me and latched on and made me think, “I love these books” our “they’re soooo fantastic” or anything. I didn’t even remember anything from the first two books which, you’d have to know me but that means there’s was nothing about either one I liked enough to remember. I won’t deny that they’re very well done and yet somehow still just moderately amusing at the same time and so they just hover around being “good” books.
