A Beautiful Dark

by Jocelyn Davies

On the night of Skye's seventeenth birthday, she meets two enigmatic strangers whose sudden appearance sends her life into a tailspin. Complete opposites, Asher is dark and wild, while Devin is fair and aloof. Skye has no idea what they want or why they seem to follow her every move-only that their presence coincides with a flurry of strange events. Soon she begins to doubt not just the identity of the two boys, but also the truth about her own past. Then, in the dead of a bitingly cold Colorado winter, Skye discovers an impossible secret that threatens to shatter her world. Torn between Asher, who she can't help falling for, and Devin, who she can't stay away from, the consequences of Skye's choice will reach further than the three of them could ever imagine.

I'm not that impressed with this book. There's no real conflict except Skye's endless inner conflict which isn't that interesting. There's no bad guy to speak of; no threat of any real kind. Just Skye and two boys and some undeveloped powers. There's not even a good deal of angst or romance to fuel a story with no conflict.

The characters are also pretty one dimensional. I don't care which boy she ends up with and I don't believe them no matter how many times they say she's powerful and special and whatever else.

One of the major problems is that [a:Jocelyn Davies|2313312|Jocelyn Davies|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1311211555p2/2313312.jpg] is obviously writing for the sequel. She alluded to all these alternate grander themes and hidden agendas and subversive motives. But she never bothers to explain or develop any of it. She's so elusive through the whole book that there's nothing to latch onto enough to actually care about. And no reason then to bother reading the sequel.
