Everything about Spider-Gwen screamed “Read Me!” from the top of it’s lungs. From the super cool costume design to the awesome implications of having Gwen Stacy, not being a live, but being a vigilante.
Image a world where Gwen Stacy lived and Peter Parker died, a world where she becomes a vigilante. This comic starts off in full swing of the Spider-Verse story arc, where the barrier between the parallel universes is broken and all the Spidey’s work in tandem to fix it back to the way needs to be. Unfortunately because of this the story gets a bit disjointed and doesn’t really gain traction until the last two or three issues as it moves away from the Spider-Verse storyline and into her own. The story starts in the middle really, as Gwen is already an established crime fighter, with a costume, and a ton of problems to sort though. So unless you’ve read Spider-Verse or have it on hand, I can’t recommend diving into this because you’ll just feel like you’re missing out on something.
I really like Gwen as Spidey, she has some similarities to Peter but she has a more edgy and more angst. The death of Peter is a fresh wound and she’s having to juggle the drama of a rising rock band with the stress of having a captain in the police force as her father. She has a bit of that fast humor we see with Peter, but she’s harsher than he is and isn’t afraid to mentally throw out a cuss word. It was pretty cool to see that some of the other characters featured in this one are different from their normal counterparts like Frank Castle and Matt Murdock.
I do really like the character, I just wish there were more substance to the story. Marvel has a way of letting event arcs water down individual story arcs, and that unfortunately seems to have happened here with Gwen. I will be reading Volume 1 though, because there is a ton of great potential
