'A stunning opening to the series' Sunday Times

Harry is out of his depth.

Detective Harry Hole is meant to keep out of trouble. A young Norwegian girl taking a gap year in Sydney has been murdered, and Harry has been sent to Australia to assist in any way he can.

He's not supposed to get too involved.

When the team unearths a string of unsolved murders and disappearances, nothing will stop Harry from finding out the truth. The hunt for a serial killer is on, but the murderer will talk only to Harry.

He might be the next victim.

Fond Of

Jo Nesbo writes in a calculated manner, slow and steady handing out details like breadcrumbs and if one isn't paying attention could slip by unnoticed.

Besides Harry, an eclectic cast of characters are provided, clowns, aborigines, and strippers -- oh my! With such a diverse grouping it held one's attention, particularly the Aboriginal folk stories that were intermingled throughout.

There were numerous twists, especially at the end, that caught me blind-sighted. Nesbo brilliantly laid clues in passing coming across as an antidote to a story only to be picked up later for their importance. It was a very clever thought process.

Not Fond Of

I wish I had read this on Kindle because there were several characters who were fleeting mentioned in the beginning, coming back to play a major role. Therefore it would have been nice to refresh my memory with just a tap.

While it was a very calculated plot it was a little slow in parts and read more like a general fiction novel instead of a mystery.

Harry Hole, has some holes in him. There is still room for development but I was given enough to curb my appetite and slowly form an acquaintance.

Final Thoughts

The Bat wasn't a book I couldn't put down but had an enticing story and expect this to be a very interesting series.
