Healthy Hair Flair Day is a special day that Mama created to spend time with her two daughters, Alia and Halima, while detangling, moisturizing, and combing their hair. It's Alia's turn and she doesn't like her hair combed! Alia will try to find creative ways to cancel Healthy Hair Flair Day and stop Mama from combing her hair!!
My Thoughts:
First of all, Alia is funny and imaginative. She reminds me of myself. Anything not to get my hair combed. I was tenderheaded then and still am.
Second of all, kudos to the illustrator, Jamil, I was feeling his depictions of the scene and the nostalgia I felt looking at it.
Third of all, I liked Mama's patience with her because this was a routine avoidance. Mama hung in there and let Alia have her moments, which were quite funny, then redirected Alias's perspective.
She was able to make something abhorrent feel special by explaining that it was a special moment for her because she spent time with Alia one-on-one.
This book opens the door for parents to have great conversations about diversity in people and hair types. It also gives food for thought to mothers and fathers everywhere about the importance of bonding and how they can deliberately create or use the opportunities presented in daily life to bond with their children.
- Who doesn't want to feel special?
- Who doesn't want to look pretty/handsome?
I kept wanting to learn a little more about Halima, Alia's sibling, but maybe there's a sequel coming. I certainly hope so because now that I have read and completed the book I am shipping it off to my daughter for my grandson. (He will be a year old on August 28th however, I believe it's never too early to start building your child's library)
