Reading the synopsis of this book I wasn't sure what to expect but got such a great story and I loved the characters. The story follows a girl with no name who just so happens to not remember who she is or were she came from finding herself in a magical world she knows just isn't "normal". She meets a young girl about her age named Eloryn and they start out on an adventure that takes them down a road with lots of secrets and they find out something about themselves that they couldn't possibly imagine.
The characters in this book are very well described and you do care about them. At times I thought they were rather mean to each other and I think they all had self esteem issues but with such burdens on their shoulders I guess I can see why they would think they could fail (if they did or not I wont tell) I was actually quite fond of Memory I really liked her character she had a great sense of humor. She seemed genuine having no memory of her life before she fell through the veil into the realm of Avall. I really felt bad for her at times she was like an outcast and everyone else was a little nervous around her. Eloryn was ok I thought she was rather indecisive and it took me a while to realize how much she cared about Memory. I really liked her chemistry with Roen. They seem rather good together if they would just admit then liked each other. Then there is Will, I am very fond of him, something about a shirtless man in fur kinda sounds really hot and the illustrations of him are rather nice to look at ;) King Thayl was the villain in this story is not a friendly person (that’s because he was a villain) and is a great character I actually wanted more of him throughout the book.
The over all story was great it was told in the 4 characters POV. I enjoyed reading from all the characters POV but at times it got a little confusing as to who's POV we were in. I haven't read a story like this before so I have nothing to compare it with to give a hint of what it was like, it had a lot of twists and turns, just when I thought I figured it out, I realized I had no idea what was going on (in a good way) which made the story not very predictable. I did want a little more world build or layout description. I felt that most of the questions were answered at least the most important stuff. The end was great, so much action and so much info to the story is given it is really done very well. I really can't wait for the next one.
I gave Memory's Wake by Selina French 4 of 5 stars. I think this is a great Young Adult Fantasy for young and old. A strong story with a cast of wonderful characters, you will simply fall in love with. The illustrations in the book really bring a lot to the story and they are gorgeous! My favorite is the last illustration in the book. I must have stared at it a dozen times, it's absolutely amazing. I strongly recommend this book, it is a great read and going to be a fantastic series!
