Sloane Chatfield finds a small town in Scotland to spend her vacation as a way to pretend to find the Highlander of her dreams and break up with him before her friends come to join her. The only place she can find a Wi-Fi signal is in Galen Buchanan's bar. When her friends change their plans and decide to come early, Sloane is desperate to find a ruggedly handsome Scot to play her boyfriend for a few days. The brusque solicitor turned bar owner scoffs at the "prim" American lass when she suggests he pretend to be her boyfriend. The need for a new refrigerator for the bar forces him to take her up on her offer, not knowing how much the arrangement will change his life.
Sloane and Galen are a couple not one person would ever see together. Sloane is a bit uptight, and lacking confidence since her ex completely obliterated her personal self-worth. Galen is a hometown boy just trying to keep his grandfather's bar afloat. The two end up bickering like an old married couple, which I found sinfully delightful.
This story twists and turns like some of the bumpy, dirt roads of the Highlands. I know in a murder mystery the reader wants to guess the ending before the last page. In a romance novel, the best part for me is to be left wondering what will happen next at every turn. This book had me laughing, crying, and waiting with anticipation of the next spectacular moment. The book ended on a fabulous note, and I can not wait to see what is in store for the next book in the How to Marry a Highlander series.
