Burn by Suzanne Wright

Burn (Dark in You, #1)

by Suzanne Wright

Part of a small demon lair in Las Vegas, tattooist Harper Wallis lives a pretty simple life. That changes overnight when she discovers that her psychic mate, or 'anchor', is a guy who's rumoured to be the most powerful demon in existence. Compelling, full of secrets and armed with raw sexuality, Knox Thorne is determined to claim her as his anchor, creating a psychic bond that will prevent their inner demons from ever turning rogue. The billionaire also wants Harper in his bed. She's not so sure she wants either of those things. No one seems to know what breed of demon Knox is, only that he's more dangerous than anything she's ever before encountered. But he refuses to walk away. And when an unknown danger starts closing in on Harper, it seems that Knox is the only one who can keep her safe. As Prime of his Las Vegas lair and a successful businessman, Knox Thorne is used to being in control. He's also used to people fearing and obeying him. Harper does neither, which unexpectedly amuses him. Unpredictable, elusive and complex, she draws Knox and his inner demon like nothing ever has. Knox is used to getting what he wants, and he wants Harper.
He'll have her, and he'll keep her safe from the threat that looms over her. Because Knox protects what's his. He won't allow anyone to take her from him. Even if it will mean letting the demon inside him rise and wreak the havoc it was created to make.

I still need Suzanne Wright to give me more...

No change in my rating as I really loved this story and enjoyed the audio experience as well. I admit the audio wasn't perfect but the storyline made up for any deficiencies. It could just be me, but I found the narrators voices a bit annoying. Harper sounds like a whiny kid and Knox's sexy voice was more porn star than sexy.

It was great to visit the Dark in You world again and I will definitely be revisiting again soon.

Burn left me on a - New Series That Rocks - high...

Hi, my name is Stacey, also known as Sassy and I'm addicted to reading romance. It's been 2 minutes since my last fix and I need Suzanne Wright to give me more....

Wow, Burn just ticked all the boxes on my checklist for favourite paranormal reads. Knox, our hero is a bossy, alpha male who is sexy and takes control of everything in and out of the bedroom. He is the Prime/leader of a demon lair, but he is a bit of an enigma because no one knows what type of demon he is. Harper is a self-reliant and loyal demon who has had an unconventional upbringing. Knox and Harper meet and realise they are each other's psychic anchor. This is a connection that surprises both of them and to some degrees they fight it, especially Harper.

I loved the main characters, but the supporting characters were some of the best I've read in a while. Harper's grandmother, Jolene, is a crack up. She's the Prime of an imp lair and her way of management is to bulldoze over opposition. Jolene is very cunning and the stories, especially the one involving, Lou aka Lucifer and his OCD, had me cacking myself laughing. The Sentinels who serve Knox are strong, loyal and protective of their Prime and anyone attached to him. Harper's workmates at the tattoo parlour are her best friends and also members of her lair. There are the usual baddies including power hungry Primes, an ex-girlfriend not wanting to let him go and an ex-boyfriend, but he was more of a hindrance than a baddie.

I did not want to stop reading at anytime and was getting cranky when life intruded on my happy buzz. Lots of really, really good sexy times for Knox and Harper, with a strong connection between them that forms effortlessly. It wasn't insta-love because neither of them wanted or expected it to happen. It takes both of them a little time to adjust to the feelings that grow between them. Most of the angst and drama is external to their relationship which is a huge plus for me.

I started Burn a little hesitantly as I wasn't sure how I would feel about demons and all of their quirks. Once I started though, I devoured it. I loved the world building and explanations of the different types of demons and the politics involved with running the different lairs.

This is my favourite Suzanne Wright story so far. I've enjoyed her previous work, but this one just left me buzzing. It was sexy, intriguing, funny and heart pumping...exactly what I want in a paranormal romance.
