Eve of Man by Giovanna Fletcher, Tom Fletcher

Eve of Man (Eve of Man, #1)

by Giovanna Fletcher and Tom Fletcher

The Handmaid's Tale meets Scythe in this gripping new dystopian trilogy written by UK-bestselling authors Giovanna and Tom Fletcher.

She survived against all odds. The first girl born in fifty years. They called her EVE.

On the first day, no one really noticed. All those babies wrapped in blue blankets--not a pink one in sight. On the third day, people were scared--a statistic-defying abundance of blue. Not just entire hospitals, not only entire countries, but the entire world. Boys. Only boys.

Until Eve. The only girl born in fifty years. The savior of mankind. Kept protected, towering above a ruined world under a glass dome of safety until she is ready to renew the human race.

But when the time comes to find a suitor, Eve and Bram--a young man whose job is to prepare Eve for this moment--begin to question the plan they've known all along. Eve doesn't only want safety, and she doesn't only want protection. She wants the truth. She wants freedom.

This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I am a big fan of Giovanna's work. I also love YA dystopian books. So when I heard about this book I knew I had to add it to my ever-growing TBR. My BF bought me a hardback copy which sadly sat on my shelf for a lot of months. I then noticed there was an audiobook version, in my library so I borrowed it via Borrowbox.

Firstly the narrators of this book are fantastic. They are engaging and get the tone just perfect. I found them very easy to listen to.

Now onto the story. Well, the blurb really is interesting. One girl born in 50 years. ONE in FIFTY years. If that ever happened I don't know how the human race would actually respond but the response in this book is a pretty good one.

Eve has been separated for her protection. She lives in The Dome. The Dome has everything that Eve needs but she is only allowed to interact with women. The mothers have volunteered themselves to look after Eve and prepare her for the day that she will meet the potentials and eventually reproduce.

Eve has always had best friend Holly with her. Holly is actually a VR program which three different boys run. Bram is one of these three boys. Eve has always opened up to Bram's Holly the most so he tens to get the 'missions' which are the most interesting rather than attending the duller aspects like the classes.

The story flicks between Eve and Bram's POV. Tom and Giovanna do an excellent job of making sure the story flows. I saw Giovanna at an event last summer and I remember Giovanna complaining that Tom finished his chapters so quickly but you cannot tell. The switch between the POVs is seamless.

Most of the story is in 'The Dome' but we did get to see some glimpses of the outside world. I presume we are going to see more of the world in the next book. The world building that we did see was good and I enjoyed the few glimpses of places that were recognisable in London.

I really enjoyed the story and I got quite invested in the story. There were some really heartbreaking moments and I may have had to wipe away a few tears. I am very excited to return to the story in a few months when book 2 is out.
