Mighty Moby by Barbara DaCosta

Mighty Moby

by Barbara DaCosta

Deep in the dark ocean, Mighty Moby lurks. Up above the ocean waves, a one-legged captain pursues the whale he clashed with long ago. Mighty Moby and the captain are soon locked in another battle...but things aren't always what they seem. The successful creative team behind Nighttime Ninja is back with another whimsical adventure with an inventive twist at the end.

Caldecott Medalist Ed Young presents dynamically interactive visuals: the orientation of the book alternates between portrait and landscape as you read the story, simulating the rocking of a boat on an ocean. At the end, it is revealed that the ocean battle is actually taking place in a bathtub--a child is playing with a toy ship and a toy whale.

This was an interesting way to turn a classic into a condensed little story without getting bogged down in it. I loved the mixed media art, and think it's a pretty decent little story overall. But it didn't just strike me as a true standout for some reason.
