This was an alright book, though I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as [b: The Burning Sky|16142057|Burning Sky|Lori Benton|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1359669927l/16142057._SX50_.jpg|21973922]. Fairfax and Titus are good characters and they are the heart and substance of the story so that always works. The secondary characters are also well enough developed and fun and interesting.

But there was no tension in this story. There's quite a bit of exposition (at least three rather blunt places). There's a few mysteries resolved without any preceding intrigue. There's also one rather annoying recap later in the book of something that has occurred earlier in the book. Recapping book 1 is one thing. Two paragraphs of recap for an insignificant moment in this book is unnecessarily annoying.

But the two fold structure of the story worked well and is was like getting two stories in one. And, I mean, I like Titus and Fairfax so it's fun to read even if it isn't great.
