The Art of Papercraft

by Helen Hiebert

Paper artist and teacher Helen Hiebert compiles a one-of-kind collection of 40 unique projects, each using just one sheet of paper. Combining decorative paper techniques like marbling, stamping, and stenciling with dimensional techniques like origami, cutting, folding, quilling, stretching, weaving, and pop-ups, The Art of Papercraft offers a rich variety of projects that will delight crafters, artists, and designers alike, including paper votive lights, pop-up cards, folded paper gift boxes and envelopes, woven paper wall hangings, miniature one-sheet books, and much more. Every project is beautifully photographed and accompanied by step-by-step visual instructions. Guidance on selecting tools, materials, and paper selection; in-depth technique instructions; and profiles of contributing paper artists make this a rich and practical celebration of papercraft.

The Art of Papercraft is a well written crafting guide with tutorials by Helen Hiebert. Due out 15th Feb 2022 from Storey, it's 320 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

This is a multi-craft tutorial guide which uses paper as primary material in the crafting. The crafts and projects are varied and provide a solid basis for learning to use paper in many forms as an artistic medium. The book is superbly well photographed throughout and the tutorials are full of clear color photos which are easy to understand.

I liked the layout: a comprehensive introduction with tools, sourcing, supplies, and more is followed by the tutorials arranged by craft - folding, cutting, construction, and papermaking and surface treatments. Each of the tutorials contains a description with methods and techniques, tools and supplies list in a highlighted text box (measurements in American standard units), and step by step instructions accompanied by photographs.

The book also contains useful suppliers and source lists, full size templates, metric conversion chart, and links to online paper-arts groups and other resources.

Five stars. This would be a superlative choice for the home artist, maker's groups and activity groups, school/classroom instruction, or public library acquisition.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
