Cain whose sense of honor despite his upbringing uproots himself from Las Vegas and moves to Miami, Florida. Cain a vampire breed who was born and raised as an assassin in the notorious Hunter program. He is longing for peace when he encounters Marina Moretskova as someone attempts to kill her. Marina is the niece of a Russian organized crime boss, who wants out of the business and has enlisted her to complete a mission that will buy his freedom. The last thing she needs is Cain, an overprotective Breed coming to her aid. The tale that unfolded was sexy, action-packed and full of feels.

We quickly discover Marina is a bloodmate and this complicates things for Cain. The two have undeniable chemistry and as much as Marina protests she doesn't need protecting, its quickly apparent she does. Cain is a trained killer, but there is this softer, pained side of him that will appeal to listeners.

Drama was kept low thanks to the intense suspense, but we see character growth as their relationship deepens. The final stretch of the story was intense as Cain works to save Marina and discovers exactly what losing her would mean.

Roger Wagner narrated again and I loved his performance for Cain. He captured all sides of his personality which enhanced the story. His pacing is well done, however this story was told with dual POVs and I was not a fan of Mariana's voice and accent. It felt forced and awkward. Thankfully it wasn't enough to hamper my enjoyment of the listen, but lets hope there are no more Russians in the series. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
