Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter, #6)

by J.K. Rowling

'In a brief statement on Friday night, Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge confirmed that He Who Must Not Be Named has returned to this country and is once more active. "It is with great regret that I must confirm that the wizard styling himself Lord - well, you know who I mean - is alive and among us again," said Fudge.' These dramatic words appeared in the final pages of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In the midst of this battle of good and evil, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince takes up the story of Harry Potter's sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, with Voldemort's power and followers increasing day by day ...

It’s been almost two months since I read this one, but so far, I’ll say that it’s my least favourite one.

This book is by far the most plot moving book of the bunch, so many things ended up happening and we got to see what more about Voldemort and what he’s up to as well. The horcuxes get a bigger mention for the first time and we get to the final bits before the climax. Despite that however, I believe that this is also the book that explores the concept of motives and being forced against your will the most so far. And it’s not just with the trio, but those around them as well.

Being redeemable or not is subjective in my not so humble opinion, but overall I still think it was interesting to see. What I disliked the most in this book was easily Ron Weasley, and more importantly his shitty way of treating his so called friends. I still don’t understand why they remained friends after book 4, I honestly don’t get it and what I don’t get even more is how can anyone in their right mind find such a petty guy appealing in the slightest. Honestly, despite the many happenings of the book, Rowling put moments with him being an idiot in places where I will forget everything else and sit here seething that this guy is as he is.

Of course, I will get the usual “he feels overshadowed nonsense” but again and again, I will say that your darker feelings doesn’t justify for one second your bad treatment to anyone else. It’s stupid, toxic and illogical. Rowling is not great when it comes to choosing couples, but I do love almost everything else in her books.

Now that’s out of the way, I believe that the background revealed in this book alongside the other details were awesome especially the ones Dumbledore ended up revealing to Harry about the past. The history of this world is rich, it sucks that sometimes things get skimmed over like the mirror of Erised, but when she wants to blow our socks off, she can easily do that. Things are getting hectic now and after that ending, I can’t wait to finish this reread with book 7. Although I believe I want to keep that for the time where I don’t have anything else to do.

Final rating: 3.5/5
