Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku, Vol. 1 (Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku, #1)

by Yuji Kaku

Even an invincible ninja may not be able to survive Hell’s Paradise!

Gabimaru the Hollow is one of the most vicious ninja assassins ever to come out of the village of Iwagakure. He’s ruthlessly efficient, but a betrayal results in him being handed a death sentence. There is only one hope: travel to a long-hidden island and recover an elixir that will make the shogun immortal and he will regain his freedom. Failure is not an option—on this island, Heaven and Hell are a hair’s breadth away.

Gabimaru the Hollow is on death row for crimes committed as an assassin when he's made an offer: die in prison, or travel to a mysterious island to locate the elixir of immortality for the shogun. He soon finds himself trapped on an island full of otherworldly creatures, rival criminals and ruthless executioners eager to take the head of any criminal who steps out of line.

I saw that the fifth volume (I think) was hitting shelves in a month or so and figured I'd go ahead and give the series a shot. So far I'm liking it, though it's definitely not for those sensitive to violence, gore, or giant ass bugs.
That last one is my issue...I have a phobia of centipedes. I understand why so many stories include giant centipedes, the amount of legs and pincers is honestly way too much to handle, but please....please I'm begging creators, pick literally anything else. I honestly think that those terrified of centipedes and spiders have been beaten down a bit too much and we need a break. How about focusing in on weird-ass larva or wasps for a while?

Phobia induced tangent aside, this is pretty solid so far. I'm curious to see where this series goes as it seems unafraid to kill off characters in mass but I have no doubts it will hold quite a few surprises. Some of the imagery is beyond weird but I'm loving the amount of action and the two main characters.
