Beartown by Fredrik Backman

Beartown

by Fredrik Backman

The bestselling author of A Man Called Ove returns with a dazzling, profound novel about a small town with a big dream—and the price required to make it come true.

People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever-encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semi-finals, and they actually have a shot at winning. All the hopes and dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys.

Being responsible for the hopes of an entire town is a heavy burden, and the semi-final match is the catalyst for a violent act that will leave a young girl traumatized and a town in turmoil. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected.

Beartown explores the hopes that bring a small community together, the secrets that tear it apart, and the courage it takes for an individual to go against the grain. In this story of a small forest town, Fredrik Backman has found the entire world.

This book had been on my TBR list for some time. I had heard so many wonderful things about it, and it's written by the same author that wrote [b:A Man Called Ove|18774964|A Man Called Ove|Fredrik Backman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1405259930s/18774964.jpg|21619954], which is another book that I loved. For those that didn't like Ove, you should give Beartown a try because they are vastly different.
When I first started reading it, I was a little worried that there would be too much hockey in it and there were a lot of characters to keep track of, but they all began to click for me rather quickly. The book is not so much about hockey as it is about the people whose lives center around the junior hockey team. Without giving anything away, something happens between two people and the effect it has on the town is sadly not surprising and that's what sucked me in. I rarely stay up late reading a book, but I couldn't put it down. There will be characters you love and root for and those you shake your head to in disgust, but that's what I liked about it. I enjoyed the psychology of understanding why people do what they do. This is one of those books that will stick with me.
