School teacher Joanna Howard stands accused of corrupting an underage boy - a child she swears she has never even met. The charge is so preposterous that she cannot believe that anyone would take it seriously. But within days the authorities build up a substantial case against her and she is appalled to find that townsfolk are more inclined to believe malicious gossip than the boring truth. Deserted by her friends, Joanna is pushed to the brink of despair. As she is drawn inexorably towards a violent confrontation with her unknown enemy, the only person prepared to believe her is a total stranger. One thing becomes clear: if she survives, she will never again be the person she was.
