Newly married and excited about honeymooning near her family in the Hamptons, ghost writer Lee Bartholomew isn't prepared for the disasters that happen when she arrives on US soil. Not only has her husband had to stay behind in London, but very soon Lee finds herself at the centre of a crime investigation that seems to get more tangled - and more sinister - as the seconds tick past. First there is a ransom attempt on her step-brother's adopted son - only the wrong boy is taken by mistake. Then comes murder, deception and further kidnapping before it seems that almost every person Lee comes into contact with could be involved, and could pose as a very real threat to her life...
Although she loves her boyfriend Tommy, Lee is suffering from commitment phobia because, as a ghost-writer, she values her privacy above all elseand she can't bear his mess. At the same time, though, she doesn't really like living alone in her big, creaky old house in Notting Hill. But whilst Lee is tries to remain in denial about the state of her crumbling home, a neighbour is suddenly killed in a fire, and it looks like arson. Then there is a second fire and a second murder closer to home and Lee finds herself drawn into a murder investigation. As her precious privacy comes under increasing pressure from all sides, could it be that Lee herself is in danger?
Ghost-writer Lee finds she has serious competition in her ghosting assignments from her agent's latest client, the well-heeled and well-connected Bettina Pleshette. Bettina could not be less like Lee. Eleven years younger than Lee, sexier, firmer and with thicker hair, the publicity savvy Bettina has coasted to the top by ghosting fluff stuff - diaries of MTV chart toppers and someone hailed as the next Paris Hilton. Determined to fight back, Lee flies out to Long Island, going head to head with Bettina for the lucrative assignment of ghosting the autobiography of controversial former rock star Shotgun Marriot. But the stakes are suddenly raised when two people are found dead. One is wearing a wedding dress and washed up onto the sand, and the other in the nearby woods. As the investigation unfolds, Shotgun Marriott appears to be the prime suspect even though the young man in the wedding dress is his son...
When ghost writer Lee Bartholomew finds herself between jobs, she decides to visit her cousin, Gussie, who has recently fled to the depths of rural Devon to recuperate from her disastrous marriage. Lee arrives to find Gussie in worse trouble than ever. Working in a restaurant, one of her customers - with a peanut allergy - died because of the peanut oil in her food, even though Gussie swears it wasn't part of the dish she served. When Gussie is fired, Lee, anxious to clear her name, embarks upon an investigation of her own. The woman was at the restaurant on a blind date with a man who called himself 'Mr Wright' - they met on the internet, but he never showed up. As Lee begins to delve into the lives of all around her, the body of another woman is found at the bottom of a nearby quarry. And this woman also had a scheduled date with 'Mr Wright'...
