During those years many Russian institutions, systems and attitudes were "westernized", all while the frontiers of the Russian Empire were dramatically expanding, drawing from a variety of different ethnic groups and social & religious traditions into the Russian domain. Two major themes unite the book: the relations of society and the state and relations between, and within, various social groups.
