Morwenna Pengelly grew up in her grandfather's cliffside Cornish cottage. On his death she is sent to live with her aunt, but retains contact with her childhood friend Tom Edwards. However, rebelling against her aunt's middle class values, Morwenna soon strikes out on her own. Tom and Morwenna's friendship blossoms into love but when he goes off to war in 1914, Morwenna is drawn to the charismatic Irishman Kieran Doyle, unaware that he holds a great secret. When he betrays her trust, Morwenna throws herself into war work. Meanwhile, Tom is captured by the enemy and suffers amnesia. Will Morwenna find happiness with either man?
