When he accompanies Joe and his friends to look for treasure in the condemmed Trumbull barn, Wishbone imagines himself as young Jim Hawkins who acquires a treasure map and soon finds himself involved with dangerous pirates.

When Joe gets a chance to prove himself as coach and discovers that it is not as easy as it seems, Wishbone is reminded of the tale in which a poor boy trades places with the crown prince of England, each one believing that the other has the easier life.

As he and Joe try to get to the eight-grade basketball game in time, Wishbone the dog imagines himself as Robinson Crusoe, the sole survivor of a shipwreck who lived on a deserted island for nearly thirty years.
Book 18
When Joe's team is in the running for the basketball playoffs, Wishbone is reminded not to judge people by size as he imagines himself as the seventeenth-century traveler, Lemuel Gulliver, whose adventures included visits to Lilliput, where people are six inches tall, and Brobdingnag, a land peopled by giants.
Book 19
While helping Joe, Sam, and David look for an ancient Oakdale secret, Wishbone imagines that he is Allan Quartermaine, searching for legendary treasure in an unexplored part of Africa.
